Egypt · 8 nights
Giza, Sail, Valley of Kings
The journey.
Day 1 · Cairo · Land, and see them from the room
Met and driven to Giza, so the first sight of the pyramids is from your own window rather than a coach park.
Day 2 · Cairo · The pyramids, and the museum
Giza and Saqqara at opening with an Egyptologist, including the inside of a pyramid, then the Grand Egyptian Museum and the full Tutankhamun collection.
Day 3 · Cairo · Old Cairo, or the bazaar
Coptic Cairo, the citadel and Khan el Khalili, ending at a coffee house that has been open since 1773.
Day 4 · Aswan · South, and onto the water
A short flight, then aboard for the sail north, with Philae temple in the afternoon. The Nile at Aswan is a different river from the one in Cairo.
Day 5 · Kom Ombo · Sailing
Waking up moving, with the bank going past the window. The double temple at Kom Ombo, then a long afternoon watching Egypt go by.
Day 6 · Edfu · The temple of Horus
The best preserved temple in Egypt, entered through a pylon sixty feet high, then sailing on toward Luxor.
Day 7 · Luxor · The west bank
The Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's terraces at dawn before the heat, with the paint in the tombs still bright after three thousand years.
Day 8 · Luxor · Karnak, and the balloon
A balloon over the west bank at first light, then Karnak, and Luxor temple after dark when it is lit.
Day 9 · Cairo · Home
A flight back to Cairo and the connection home.
