The journey.

Day 1 · Tbilisi · Land, and walk down

A four hour flight and no visa to apply for at either end. You are having dinner in the old town the day you leave home, with sulphur steam coming off the bathhouse domes.

Day 2 · Tbilisi · The old town, and the new

The baths, the fortress and the balconied streets with a guide, then the modern city across the river and a qvevri wine poured from a clay jar buried in the ground.

Day 3 · Kazbegi · North, up the Military Highway

The old road to Russia through the Caucasus, ending under a five thousand metre mountain with Gergeti Trinity church alone on its hill.

Day 4 · Kazbegi · The mountains

A free day at altitude. Walk up to the church rather than driving, which takes ninety minutes and is worth every one of them.

Day 5 · Kakheti · East, into the vines

Back down and east to the wine country, where Georgia's food actually comes from and where wine has been made the same way for eight thousand years.

Day 6 · Kakheti · The estates

Two or three wineries and a supra, the Georgian feast, with a toastmaster who will not let you leave. Nothing else is scheduled, deliberately.

Day 7 · Tbilisi · Back, and the last night

A final dinner in a city that does dinner extremely well, with the view from Narikala at dusk and the cable car running below.

Day 8 · Tbilisi · Home

Driven to the airport, timed to your flight, after a last khachapuri you will think about later.
