An overnight flight lands in the morning and nothing is scheduled beyond finding somewhere to eat, with the Acropolis lit above the rooftops.
Day 2 · Athens · The rock, and the museum
The Acropolis at opening before the heat, with an archaeologist, then the museum that makes sense of it. The afternoon is Plaka.
Day 3 · Santorini · South, to the caldera
A short flight, then a cliff village where every terrace faces the same flooded volcano. No photograph prepares you for the first sight of it.
Day 4 · Santorini · The caldera, by boat
A private sail with lunch aboard, out before the crowded catamarans, with a swim off the back inside the crater.
Day 5 · Santorini · Wine, and the villages
Assyrtiko grown in low baskets against the wind, which exists almost nowhere else, and the inland villages people actually live in.
Day 6 · Santorini · Nothing at all
A completely free day, placed where you will want it: the pool, the caldera, and a long lunch.
Day 7 · Mykonos · North, to the other island
A ferry across to an island that is the opposite of Santorini in temperament, where the wind is constant and the windmills explain themselves.
Day 8 · Mykonos · Delos, and the town
The sacred island, uninhabited for two thousand years and once the religious centre of the Aegean, then the old town in the evening.
Day 9 · Mykonos · The beaches, or nothing
A free day for the south coast, the pool, or the town again.
Day 10 · Athens · Home
A flight back to Athens and the connection home.
