Day 1 · Nairobi · Land, and stay still

An overnight flight lands early. One Nairobi night before the bush, which everyone needs more than they expect.

Day 2 · Nairobi · Elephants and giraffes

The Sheldrick elephant nursery at feeding time and the giraffe centre afterwards, then an afternoon at leisure.

Day 3 · Masai Mara · Into the Mara

A light aircraft onto a grass strip, met by the camp, and on a game drive within the hour. The first lion is lying in the open with no fence anywhere.

Day 4 · Masai Mara · Two drives, dawn and dusk

This is the whole point. Coffee poured on the bonnet at six with the plain waking up around you.

Day 5 · Masai Mara · The river, and the crossings

The Mara river in season, wildebeest massed on a bank deciding whether to go, and the predators who wait there.

Day 6 · Masai Mara · Again, and better

By now your guide knows what you have not seen and goes looking for it. A leopard in a fig tree takes patience and a good tracker.

Day 7 · Masai Mara · The last dawn

A balloon over the plain at first light if you took it, then the flight back to Nairobi.

Day 8 · Nairobi · Home

A day room and the flight home, with the plains going on and on from the aircraft window.
