Maldives · 6 nights
Reef, Villa, Sandbank
The journey.
Day 1 · The atoll · Land, then leave the land
A short flight from India, then a boat or a seaplane. You are on the island by lunch, and the moment the seaplane banks over the atolls is the trip's first photograph.
Day 2 · The atoll · Nothing, deliberately
The first full day has nothing in it. That is not laziness, it is the point, and the water is a colour that looks edited and is not.
Day 3 · The atoll · Under the surface
Snorkelling the house reef, which is usually the best snorkelling of the week and costs nothing, or the first dive if you are certified.
Day 4 · The atoll · The sandbank
A boat to a strip of sand that exists only at low tide, with a hamper and an umbrella and no other people, collected three hours later.
Day 5 · The atoll · Dolphins, at dusk
An hour out on a dhoni as the light goes. Spinner dolphins show up most evenings, which is as close to a guarantee as wildlife gets.
Day 6 · The atoll · Still nothing
Another completely free day. Six nights is what makes the point at which you stop checking the time actually arrive.
Day 7 · Malé · Home
A boat or seaplane back, with the atolls visible from the aircraft window for an hour afterwards.
