The journey.

Day 1 · Paris · Land, and walk

An overnight flight lands in the morning and nothing is scheduled, because the first day is jet lag. The first coffee is taken standing at a zinc counter, because that is how it is done.

Day 2 · Paris · The city, on foot and on water

The essentials in one guided morning, then the Seine in the evening when the light does the work. Everything in between is yours.

Day 3 · Paris · Versailles, or Paris

A free day, or the palace with a guide at opening while the Hall of Mirrors is briefly empty. Both are correct.

Day 4 · Lucerne · East, by fast train

The TGV to Basel and on to Lucerne. Four hours, and the best four hours of travelling on this trip, watching the land go vertical through the window.

Day 5 · Lucerne · The lake, and the mountain

The lake steamer and a rotating cable car to Mount Titlis, where you stand on snow in the middle of the afternoon.

Day 6 · Interlaken · Between two lakes

A short train south into the Bernese Oberland, where the mountains get serious and the Aare runs a colour that does not look real.

Day 7 · Interlaken · The Top of Europe

Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe at three thousand four hundred and fifty four metres, with the Aletsch glacier below.

Day 8 · Zermatt · To the Matterhorn

A village reached only by train and with no cars in it, which is most of why it stays lovely. The mountain appears above the rooftops as you pull in.

Day 9 · Zermatt · The mountain, up close

Glacier Paradise, the highest cable car station in Europe, with the Matterhorn close enough to pick out the climbing routes.

Day 10 · Geneva · Home

Down through the valley to Geneva, timed to your flight.
