How early should Indians apply for a Schengen visa in 2026, and what has changed?

The short answer

Apply 8 to 12 weeks before you fly. Consulates accept a Schengen application up to six months ahead and no later than 15 days before departure. The fee is €90 per adult and €45 for children aged 6 to 12, plus the visa centre's service charge. The standard decision takes 15 days and can stretch to 45. Apply to the country of your longest stay.

The timeline, from twelve weeks out

The rules allow an application as early as six months before travel and as late as 15 days before. The late end is a trap in spring and summer, when visa-centre appointments in Delhi and Mumbai disappear for weeks. Work back from the flight, not forward from the booking.

Indicative for a first or second Schengen visa. Frequent travellers on a multi-year visa skip most of it.

Which country to apply to

Apply to the country where you will spend the most time. If two countries share the longest stay, apply to the one you enter first. You lodge it with the consulate, or its visa centre, responsible for where you legally live in India.

A ten-night journey of five nights on Lake Como, three in Lucerne and two in Paris is an Italian application. Book the hotels to match, because a file that names Italy but shows most nights in France invites questions.

Cascade visas and the new border system

On 18 April 2024 the European Commission adopted a 'cascade' regime for Indian nationals living in India and applying there. After obtaining and lawfully using two visas within the previous three years, you can be issued a two-year multiple-entry visa. That is normally followed by a five-year visa, if your passport has enough validity left. While it is valid you travel much as a visa-free visitor would, within the 90-days-in-180 rule.

The Entry/Exit System has been fully operational at every external Schengen border crossing since 10 April 2026. It records your passport details, fingerprints and a facial image, and logs each entry and exit. You do nothing in advance; the first crossing simply takes a little longer.

Why files are refused, and what a strong one shows

Consulates assess the same few things every time: why you are travelling, where you will stay, how you will pay, and whether you will go home. Most refusals Indian travellers describe trace back to one of these being unclear, not to any single missing paper.

The consulate checksWhat weakens a fileWhat a strong file shows
Purpose of the tripFive countries in eight days, vague cover letterTwo or three bases, a day-by-day plan, one clear reason
AccommodationBookings that do not match the itinerary or datesEvery night covered, matching the route and the cover letter
Means to payLarge unexplained deposits just before applyingSteady statements, ITRs and a sponsor letter where relevant
Intention to returnNo proof of work or ties at homeEmployer leave letter or business documents, return flight held
Medical insuranceMissing, or not covering repatriationCover for emergency care, hospitalisation and repatriation
PassportExpiring soon after the tripValid at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area

How we prepare a Schengen file

  • Visa timing drives the itinerary, not the other way round: we fix the route and the main country first.
  • Hotels are held on refundable rates until the visa is in hand, so a refusal or delay does not leave you paying for rooms you cannot use.
  • Itineraries stay simple and consistent: the cover letter, bookings and day plan tell the same story.
  • Flights are held, not ticketed, until the decision; nothing is ticketed until you approve it.
  • You attend the appointment for fingerprints; the file arrives complete and in order.

Can Indians get a 5-year Schengen visa?

Which country should I apply to for a multi-country Europe trip?

The country where you spend the most nights. If stays are equal, apply to the country you enter first, through the consulate covering where you live in India.

What is the EES and do Indians need to register?

The Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026, records fingerprints, a facial image and your entries and exits at the Schengen border. Indian visitors are registered at their first crossing; there is nothing to apply for beforehand.
