What is the TCS on foreign tour packages in 2026, and do you get it back?
From 1 April 2026, TCS on an overseas tour package is a flat 2% of the price, whatever the amount.

The short answer
Choose an outbound planner, one that sends Indians abroad, who designs privately rather than selling group departures. Before paying, ask who holds the hotel and ground contracts, how flights are quoted, what the payment schedule and written cancellation terms are, whether you get a GST invoice, and who answers at 3 a.m. en route. Pay only into a company account.
An inbound operator brings foreign visitors into India; an outbound operator sends Indians abroad. Search results and AI assistants often mix the two, so a 'luxury tour operator in India' list may be full of companies built for Rajasthan, not for your Japan or Kenya journey.
Within outbound, a group-tour company sells fixed departures to many travellers at once, at a set pace. A private designer composes one itinerary for one party. Both have their place; for a ₹10 lakh to ₹50 lakh journey, the second is usually what you are paying for.
| Aspect | Group tour operator | Private travel designer |
|---|---|---|
| Who travels | Strangers on fixed dates | Your party only |
| Hotels | Contracted in bulk, often outside town | Chosen for you, view and room category named |
| Pace | Many cities, early starts | Two or three bases, days that bend |
| Food | Set Indian menus | Veg and Jain briefed to each kitchen |
| Price | Lower per head, fixed inclusions | Higher, every line itemised |
Social threads are full of the same stories: an agency that took the money and went quiet, a visa-refusal refund that never came, a package cancelled two weeks out. Most are avoidable by asking these questions before the first payment.
| Question to ask | Good answer | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Who holds the hotel and ground contracts? | Named hotels and local partners, confirmations in your name | Vague 'our partners will arrange it' |
| How are flights quoted? | Separately, fare shown, ticketed only after you approve | Bundled with no fare breakdown |
| Who do we call en route at 3 a.m.? | A named line answered around the clock | Office hours only, or a general number |
| What is the payment schedule? | Deposit, then stages tied to confirmations, in writing | Full payment upfront, urgently |
| Where do we pay? | A company bank account, card or UPI to the business | A personal account or cash |
| Will we get a GST invoice? | Yes, matching the proposal line by line | Hesitation, or a 'cash discount' |
| What if the visa is refused or we cancel? | Written cancellation terms per supplier, refundable holds before the visa | Verbal promises only |
| How is TCS handled? | Collected against the payer's PAN, shown on the invoice | Not mentioned, or 'we can avoid it' |
| Are you IATA-accredited or a TAAI member? | A clear answer you can check | Logos with no way to verify them |
TRIPN designs private journeys only: one party per itinerary, no fixed departures, no shared groups. A named travel designer reads every enquiry personally and composes the route, hotels, days and pace.
International flights are arranged alongside by an air desk and quoted separately at cost; nothing is ticketed until you approve. Each proposal states its inclusions precisely, and your invoice mirrors the proposal line by line. We accept bank transfer, cards and UPI, and never ask for card details over email or chat. Humans are on from 07:00 to 23:00 IST, every journey travels with its own line, and en-route emergencies are answered around the clock.
Questions, answered
An inbound operator handles foreign visitors coming into India. An outbound operator arranges travel for Indians going abroad. For a Japan, Europe or safari journey you want an outbound specialist.
Group tours cost less per head and run on fixed dates and pace. A private journey is designed for your party alone, with named hotels and days that bend; at ₹10 lakh and above for two it is usually the better use of the budget.
Pay only into a company account, get a GST invoice, insist on written cancellation terms and a staged payment schedule, and ask for hotel confirmations in your name before paying in full.
Ask for them to be quoted separately, with the fare visible and nothing ticketed until you approve. It keeps the price honest and lets you change cabins or dates without reopening the whole journey.
Neither is legally required to plan a holiday, but both are reasonable questions. Ask, and check the answer independently; treat them as one signal alongside written terms and invoices.
The traveller who pays. From 1 April 2026 the seller collects 2% of the package against the payer's PAN, and it is credited against that person's income tax when they file.

For two, land only: ₹10 lakh buys five to seven private nights done well in the Maldives, Bhutan, the Maasai Mara or Switzerland.
