How do we do Japan with elderly parents and vegetarian food?

The short answer

A private three-generation Japan journey of 9 to 10 nights costs about ₹16 lakh to ₹60 lakh or more for a family of four, land only, roughly ₹4 lakh to ₹15 lakh per person; a family of six lands near ₹23 lakh to ₹85 lakh. Vegetarian and Jain meals work when every kitchen is briefed about dashi, the fish stock in most broths. Indians need an eVisa.

The hidden issue is dashi

Japanese cooking rests on dashi, a stock usually made with katsuobushi, dried bonito flakes. It is in miso soup, noodle broths, tempura dipping sauce and many simmered vegetables, so a dish that looks vegetarian often is not. Jain needs go further: no onion, garlic or root vegetables, which rules out much everyday cooking.

The answer is planning, not packed theplas. Dashi can be made with kombu and shiitake instead of fish, and good kitchens will do it when asked in writing, in Japanese, weeks ahead.

We send each kitchen a written food brief in Japanese before the family lands.

Ten nights at a parent's pace

Kyoto's great temples mean gravel paths, slopes and steps: Kiyomizu-dera sits at the top of a steep lane, and Fushimi Inari's gates climb a mountain. Plan one major site each morning, a long lunch, and rest before dinner. In ryokan, futons on tatami and low tables are hard on knees, so choose rooms with Western beds, chairs and a private bath.

  • Nights 1 to 3, Tokyo: a gentle arrival, the Meiji Shrine at opening time, a private sushi or vegetarian counter, teamLab or a garden for the children.
  • Nights 4 to 5, Hakone: a ryokan room with beds and its own onsen, Lake Ashi by boat, Mount Fuji when the sky is clear.
  • Nights 6 to 9, Kyoto: Arashiyama and a shojin lunch at Tenryu-ji, a private tea ceremony, Gion at dusk by car rather than on foot.
  • Night 10, Osaka or Tokyo for the flight home. Air India's Delhi to Osaka nonstop begins on 2 February 2027.

Private car or Shinkansen, and the luggage trick

Japan's luggage forwarding, takkyubin, changes family travel. Yamato's TA-Q-BIN takes suitcases from the airport counter or hotel desk to the next hotel, usually by the following day, for a few thousand yen a piece. The family rides with one small bag each and meets the cases at the next hotel.

Fine five-star hotels in Tokyo and Kyoto with connecting rooms, a Hakone ryokan night with beds and a private bath, a driver-guide on touring days, Green Car rail and every kitchen briefed.

Elevated · ₹24L to ₹38L for four

Suites at the grand addresses, Gora Kadan or its peers in Hakone, a driver-guide every day, a private tea ceremony, a shojin lunch at Tenryu-ji and a vegetarian kaiseki evening.

The rarest · ₹38L to ₹60L+ for four

Aman Tokyo and Aman Kyoto or a restored private machiya, a private chef cooking vegetarian and Jain kaiseki, cars throughout and doors opened that are usually closed.

Cherry blossom (late March to early April) and Kyoto's autumn colour (mid to late November) lift every band by 30 to 40 percent and sell out six to nine months ahead. A family of six usually needs three rooms or a residence, so it runs about 1.45 times the price for four.

Questions, answered

Also asked.

How much does a luxury Japan trip cost for a family of four from India?

About ₹16 lakh to ₹60 lakh or more for 9 to 10 nights, land only, which is roughly ₹4 lakh to ₹15 lakh per person. Business class adds about ₹2.5 lakh to ₹4.5 lakh per person.

What about a family of six with grandparents?

Plan on about ₹23 lakh to ₹85 lakh or more for 9 to 10 nights, land only, because six people usually need three rooms or a residence. Per person it stays near ₹4 lakh to ₹14 lakh.

Can vegetarians and Jains eat well in Japan?

Yes, with planning. Most broths use dashi made from bonito, so every kitchen needs a written brief. Shojin ryori temple cooking, such as Shigetsu at Tenryu-ji in Kyoto, has no meat or fish, and Tokyo has many Indian restaurants.

Is Japan good for elderly parents?

Very, if you plan the walking. Use a private driver-guide, one big site each morning, ryokan rooms with Western beds and chairs, and luggage forwarding so nobody carries a suitcase on a station platform.

Should we take the Shinkansen or private cars?

Both. The Shinkansen runs Tokyo to Kyoto in a little over two hours, with a porter and car at each end. Use private cars within cities and in Hakone, and forward the suitcases by takkyubin.

Do Indians need a visa for Japan?

Yes. Indian nationals apply for Japan's eVisa through VFS; it has run since 1 April 2024 and gives a single entry for tourism of up to 90 days. The eVisa usually takes about ten working days; apply four weeks ahead, earlier for blossom season.
